sodium has 2 and 8 electron in k and L shell respectively where has 1 electron in M shell which makes it unstable because atleast 8 electrons are needed to make it stable that's why it loses one electron and electron in negative hence losing a negative charge means acquiring a positive charge that's why it is written as Na+ and in Chlorine there is 2,8 and 7 electrons in K L, and M shells it has one electron less to make it stable thus to be stable it should take 1 electron in it's M shell and make outermost shell have 8 electrons thus it gain one electron, means gain 1 negative charge hence it is written as Cl-1 therefore valency of sodium and chlorine is +1 and -1 respectively.
Concept : Elements should have 8 electrons in it's outermost shell to make itself stable.
