It depends what type of game you like really.
Final Fantasy: 4 Heroes of Light, Final Fantasy 3 and 4 are turn based RPGs where you wait your turn to attack, then the enemy attacks.
FFA2 is a turn based strategy so you move all of your units attacking and healing in the process then the enemy does the same.
Revenant Wings is an RTS akin to Age of Empires and the such.
Ring of Fates and Echoes of Time are action RPGs where you have free reign over how often you can attack etc.
Storywise, Final Fantasy 3 and 4 are probably the most sound, especially since their stories are developed throughout rather than being sequels. If you've played FF12 on the PS2 then Revenant Wings will be easy to understand provided you got far enough as the characters recur in it. A2 might also cause a few problems if you haven't played FF Tactics Advance on the GBA.
As for your question, Echoes of Time is a sequel to Ring of Fates, but they have their own different stories.
My favourite has probably been A2, because I enjoy those types of games and my least favourite probably Echoes of Time, but if you enjoy Ring of Fates then you'll enjoy it more.

Don't bother with the Gameboy Final Fantasies, as they are not as good as their PSone cousins. Final Fantasy IX is my favourite: play if you want a medieval atmosphere Final Fantasy VII is also great: play if you want a more high-tech atmosphere pSX is an excellent emulator for the PSone, but if you don't like it, this website links to others
Personally, I'd get FF Tactics A2. As for the Crystal Chronicles games, the differences between them seem to be similar to the differences between FFX and FFX-2.
