Standard ball ammunition, would it get the job done or would it only piss off the attacker? Isn't it basically a mini AK round?

The 7.62x25 is a light-weight, high-velocity round. At 86 grains and 1,500 fps the round can penetrate some levels of body armor, including Kevlar. The problem with 7.62x25 as a self-defense round is over-penetration. In urban areas you might successfully kill your attacker and the kid in the house next door. The answer to your question is YES it is very viable self-defense round, but be extremely aware of your back stop.
I guess you could stretch the imagination and call it a mini AK round but how about a bottleneck .30 caliber 85 grain with 1 inch case length? Wipes out the imagination a little. Not bad for a defense round and yes they do penetrate and may cause collateral damage but realistically who could be concerned at that moment when defending your precious life.
The North Koreans used it very effectively against their enemies in the Korean War.
