As with any toy breed, Malteses have smaller bladders so frequency of urination is more. I have Yorkies and all of mine are house trained and my Mom has Malteses and all of hers are also house trained. As with any dog, it takes persistance and patience. When my puppies go home they already know to go to the pad for elimination. The problems with potty training come with too much freedom and no one there to supervise. Here's a good article to get you started on the right foot with potty training.

I don't think potty training a Maltese would be any different from potty training any other dog. But if you rescue a full grown and house trained Maltese, you won't have to worry about that!
I've never had a maltese but i have a yorkiepoo is around the same size as a maltese. Smaller dogs are hard to potty train and train in general, you have to be very on top of training them. I use the "treat" potty training. If you take them out to potty, give him a treat as soon as he gets inside. Continue this until they finally go to the door to tell you they need to go out. Its takes time, but if your patient it will work alot better. good luck!!
I have trained many dogs and no dog is different from another dog..They just need taught. Some people want to start small dogs on papers or pads and that in my view is a mistake..just get them when you have the time to go out every two hours or so and especially about 15 min or so after meals..take a walk, walking stimulates and helps them go potty. When you cannot be available crate them for short periods of time. At night say from 11 pm-6 am plan on getting up once. But during the days outside as much as possible so they find spots they like and learn that is their place! Best to you on your new pup when you get it.
I had the same concern before I got my Maltese. It wasn't too hard... just persistence on your part, esp. in the beginning. You have to start right away. The thing that makes it hard is their tiny bladders. They just can't hold it as long. Mine is 95% outside trained, which took a couple weeks, and then the rest of the time she goes on paper, which is fine when we're gone.
I'm not excellent at coaching dogs however i will tell you what I did. I maintain my maltese in the kitchen. I put a youngster gate up so she are not able to leave & I hold her puppy pads in there. We received her when she used to be about 2 months old & she started occurring them right away. But when she wasn't constrained to the kitchen she would just go on the carpet anyplace she occurred to be when she wanted to move. She is older now, just turned 9 months historical & she is doing higher. She is in the kitchen when i'm not at house or if i am slumbering. She occasionally has accidents & when she does I scold her if I see her doing it however no longer if she does it when i'm not looking in view that then she would not understand what i am yelling at her for. & then I take her to her puppy pads so she will comprehend the place she is supposed to move. That is good that your dog likes the crate. We bought a crate after we had our dog for a even as however she would not love it & i do not like maintaining her in it considering the fact that she cannot get to a dog pad when she wants to so I simply leave her within the kitchen where she has plenty of space. After a couple of weeks of your dog staying on her leash together with her pads nearby you will find if she is going to go to them herself. Of direction which you could let her play freely now, simply preserve an eye on her. & by no means use her crate as a type of punishment or she will not wish to go there anymore. My dog has long past potty in the mattress a few instances so I under no circumstances let her sleep in there despite the fact that I fairly would find it irresistible if she did. My grandma's puppy was once paper trained earlier than she bought him & he used to be most effective like 2 months historic & he certainly not goes within the mattress, I do not know how persons instruct their puppies so good. I've read though that malteses can also be difficult to train. That you can are trying shopping some spray or scented pads so he/she is going to want to use them at all times. If they have an accident us an odor neutralizing spray in order that they is not going to need to potty there again. & I feel you should persist with preserving your puppy to going within on pads. I are living in Norther Japan & it snows so much here within the wintry weather & it rains loads & my dog refuses to ever stroll on her harness & she simplest has one layer of fur so it is beautiful unattainable to take her outside to potty & she could be relatively uncomfortable so I feel it's satisfactory to let your puppy go within all the time. Excellent luck to you though, I just concept i might share what i'm doing with my dog.
smaller dogs are harder to potty train. we have a bichon freese that still isnt completely potty trained yet. so we try using those scented doggy pads and they go to them instead of on the floor.. hope this helps!
Well i've never had a maltese, but i can tell you, any type of dog can be trained with dedication, and presistance.
