My muffler strap broke and I am trying to replace it.I have a 2000 Chevy Cavalier. The strap has a metal rod that should go through this rubber thing that is connected to the car.(it has a little knob thing on the end so I am not even sure how I would get the old one out first of all.I cannot even get old the strap off yet.I am a woman so I am not enjoying this.LOL.Do I have to replace the whole rubber thing? If so,why did it not come WITH the strap?
Update:The strap I got from Bumper to Bumper(National Auto) looks exactly like the one that is on the car.Not sure if I can going to be able to work the rod out of the rubber thing though. If you say so.LOL.

Successful operation...
I was looking for some helpful hints before I started the project and found this thread so I thought I'd post my success story.
1) I removed the rear tire first to give me the most working area without having to get under the car (I sure hate all the dirt/rust that falls into the eyes when working on exhaust systems).
2) Because the straping was broken due to rust, I tried to remove as much of it by just twisting it and breaking it off at the rusty areas to get it out of the way. I recommend this if possible. I would have removed the bolt, but it was seized up and I was to lazy to get the cutter out. Either way, be sure to get most of the hanger out of the way because you'll need to easily twist the metal rod back and forth and there isn't much room to work in the muffler well.
3) Then I used channel locks to squeeze the "little knob" through the rubber hanger. This actually pushed through fairly easily, but it of course stops immediately once it's in the rubber hanger.
4) With most of the strapping removed (again, if possible), I just twisted back and forth making sure the metal rod was turning at least a little with each twist, all the time tugging downward. The rust was very thick and I could feel it crunching inside the rubber, but the rod eventually worked its way out. The rubber hanger will move quite a bit, but should provide enough resistance to allow the rod to twist.
5) Inserting the new rod was actually no challenge, it simply slid all the way through with no force necessary.
I hope you have a similar experience...not to hard at all.
For the record, my after market strapping that I bought from Advance Auto fit perfectly around my original muffler.

replace a muffler strap?

The strap can be purchased separately at a parts store and should come with the metal rod that engages into the rubber hanger hole....you may have to spray the hole and metal rod with WD-40 to ease removal...they are not easy to remove because of the knob on the end that keeps them from coming out of the hanger hole...a good deal of tugging and prying may be invovled...cussing is allowed in this operation. Some shops with a Sawzall will simply cut the old knob off. Another choice would be to unbolt the rubber hanger mounting bracket and replace it with a universal hanger and muffler strapping...again, from a parts store.
The last choice is to reuse the original hanger rod with a band clamp that you clamp around the muffler in place of the original strapping....hardware stores or home centers carry stainless steel clamps for ductwork....you may have to splice two or three together to get the right length. Parts stores may cary them also for other applications.

Cheap way is to buy a roll of plumbers tape (metal strapping with holes in it) in the help isle at any auto parts store. Simply strap around the muffler using the old straps bolt hole to secure. Under 5 bucks.
no you just have to replace the metal band. spray the rubber with a lubricant like wd/40 ad work it out with a pair of large pliers. here is a tip, i worked at a muffler shop. the aftermarket hanger sold at a partstore will not fit on a stock muffler so get the oem one from the dealer
are you talking about the strap goes around the muffler? if you are then yes you can replace it or just splice it together with a piece of metal and pop rivets.
