Main Entry: size zero
Part of Speech: n
Definition: the smallest size of women's clothing
Example: Size zero in the US is equivalent to UK size four.
Size 0 is a women's clothing size in the US catalog sizes system equivalent to a UK size 4 or a Europe size 32-34. It is also a concept within the fashion media relating to models with low body mass.
Bust size: 32 inches (80 cm); Waist size: 24 inches (59 cm); Hip size: 32 inches (82 cm). It is often mistaken for a petite size because it is so small. While many petite women do wear size 0, the true definition of petite sizes in the fashion world has more to do with height than with thinness; in the United States, it generally refers to a woman who is under 5'4" (163 cm).
Size 00 is a size smaller than size 0. Size 00 is the equivalent to a UK size 2, which can be extremely difficult to find.
The media have labeled many celebrities as size 0, which dilutes the meaning and "size 0" now often refers any woman no matter what her size as long as she is slender.
Size Meaning
Size 0 is a women's clothing size in the US catalog sizes system, believed to be equivalent to a UK size 4, a European size 32,an Australian size 4 and a men's size 20. Due to the current hype about super-slim actresses and models, and a public awareness of eating disorders, it's often incorrectly assumed that size 0 and 00 were invented to fit a new class of dangerously thin women. Actually, the changing of clothing sizes over time (referred to as vanity sizing or size inflation) has caused the adoption of lower numbers. Modern size 0 clothing, depending on brand and style, will fit measurements of anywhere from 30-22-32 to 33-25-35.
"Size 0" is often used to refer to extremely thin, emaciated, or shorter individuals (especially women), or trends associated with them. This usage does not always relate to the clothing size - the "size 0 ban" at the Madrid Fashion Week had body mass index as its criterion, not body measurements. The BMI ban was the result of the deaths of models Luisel Ramos, Ana Carolina Reston, and Eliana Ramos. The three had died of eating disorders, and all had BMIs under 16. Other models with low BMIs include Snejana Onopka, Natasha Poly, and Vlada Roslyakova. "Size 0" is also associated with anorexia and several other health disorders. Size 0 has become a hit in recent Page 3 culture with some celebrities such as Victoria Beckham and Nicole Richie adopting it. Karen Carpenter was known to be a Size 0 celebrity. Recently, in India, the Bollywood filmstar Kareena Kapoor created a huge wave by adopting the Size 0 figure.
Size zero does not equal anorexia as many people seem to think, although I can give credit to the fact that people trying to slim to size zero can be engulfed by eating disorders. Yes, to be such a small size, one HAS to be very thin, but dangerously thin is debateable in my honest opinion. In UK size zero is actually a size 4.
