The HTC 8X uses a micro-SIM. This was mentioned a recent article I read about how you could take an AT&T or T-Mobile micro-SIM and place it in the Verizon model to use it on the alternative carriers. You might have a micro-SIM, depending on how old your phone is. They've been commonplace for a few years, I think, so that might be what you know as a "standard sim card," but I might be wrong.
I'll add that I would recommend the Lumia 810 over the HTC 8X. You don't have the HD display, but the 810 (I'm pretty sure) is cheaper, and though it only has 8 GB of storage, it has a microSD slot to add a card for more storage (up to 64 GB). Nokia's devices also have SEVERAL exclusive applications that make its devices better than what HTC offers. Just a few examples:
Exclusive deals with developers: Words with Friends and Draw Something recently came to Windows Phone. They're $4 each, and have no free, ad-supported version. That is, EXCEPT with Nokia devices. They do have ad-supported, free versions of the games, and they've had a few other deals like this (they got Angry Birds on their phones before the others on Windows Phone 7).
Nokia Music: I love Windows Phone for a lot of reasons. However, this seems to be THE best part about my phone. You get something that is a free music streaming service, and it is ad-free. The only constraint is that you only get 6 skips per hour, a fair tradeoff for no ads, I'd say. You can also download 4 playlists to your phone for offline use, so you're not using data. I've used this multiple times daily, and it's really awesome.
Nokia Drive: I've not used this, but if I remember correctly, it's an app to give you turn-by-turn navigation by voice.
Nokia City Lens: This is more of a novelty, but it's a fun one to show off. You open the app, choose what you are looking for (restaurant, shopping, etc.), then the phone basically opens what looks like the camera. For example, when you choose "food," it will show you all of the nearby restaurants your phone is facing (so you just turn to see what's in a different direction). It's more something you'd use as a tourist, but it's neat to show others.
Oh, and I know HTC touts its Beats tech, and that the 8X has a better speaker (it has a small amplifier). However, after using my 920, I'll say its speaker is nice, and they have Dolby digital audio (and an equalizer that has presets and the ability to be adjusted manually) to counter that, and it's good as well.
I know I added a LOT of excess information to my answer, but I thought I'd inform you that Nokia's devices really do offer a lot more on the software/application side than HTC, which basically offers better screen resolution and nothing else. My sister is on Verizon, and chose the Lumia 822 over the 8X after playing with both for a while.
